Study plan

The study plan includes:

1. INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH, guided by at least one Tutor, which culminates with the defense of an original PhD dissertation. The Doctorate Committee appoints one Tutor for each student. In some cases, a second Tutor may be appointed. Students will have daily contact with the research group within which they are placed. In addition, they should expect a formal meeting with their Tutor(s) at least once a month.
All research students will present their research regularly throughout their studies in seminars, annual reviews, summer schools, and research conferences both in Italy and abroad. Students will get some funding to attend conferences and workshops.

2. BASIC COURSES (5 credits), a common core for all the PhD students, whose aim is to study in depth the paradigms (theoretical, experimental, etc.) used in the Mathematics and Computer Science disciplines for knowledge progress. Basic courses require a final exam to be given by the end of the second year of the Doctorate Programme.
For the XXXII cycle, the following basic course has been activated:
Project Management (5 credits); Teacher: Prof. Danilo Caivano (see course schedule below).

3. SPECIALIZED COURSES (35 credits), which may also include international summer schools of interest for the individual research. The student chooses the specialized courses of interest to be attended during the first two years; three of such courses require a final exam to be given by the end of the second year of the Doctorate Programme.

4. SEMINARS on various topics, to be attended during the three years of the Doctorate Programme, for at least 40 hours: a) 10 hours on topics related to advanced information technology; b) 10 hours on scientific research writing; c) 20 hours on topics related to research programs, knowledge sharing with industry, copyright and patents. Such seminars are part of the student education, as required in article 4, section 1 (f) ) of the 8th Feb 2013 Ministerial Decree n. 45 ("Regulations concerning ... criteria for the creation of  PhD Programmes by registered institutions”).

For the accademic year 2016/2017, the following SPECIALIZED COURSES have been offered:

• Accessibility Issues in Smart Environment Design (2 credits); Teachers: Prof. Carmelo Ardito and Prof. Rosa Lanzilotti (see course schedule below).
• Advanced Techniques for Structured Data Mining  (5 credits); Teachers: Prof. Annalisa Appice, Prof. Stefano Ferili and Dr. Corrado Loglisci (see course schedule below).
• Automatic Learning for the Semantic Web (3 credits); Teachers: Dr. Claudia d’Amato and Prof. Nicola Fanizzi, (see course schedule below).
• Big Data Analytics (4 credits); Teachers: Prof. Michelangelo Ceci and Dr. Gianvito Pio, (see course schedule below).
• Computational Logic (3 credits); Teachers: Prof. Francesca Lisi, (see course schedule below).

• Emotion Awareness in Social Computing (2 credits); Teachers: Dr. Fabio Calefato and Dr. Nicole Novielli, (see course schedule below).
• Empirical Research and Data Analysis (2 credits); Teachers: Prof.. Maria Teresa Baldassarre, (see course schedule below).
• Equations with partial derivatives (3 credits); Teachers: Prof. Giuseppe Maria Coclite, (see course schedule below).
• Geometry and Meaning (3 credits); Teachers: Dr. Pierpaolo Basile, (see course schedule below).
• Numerical Methods for Data Mining (5 credits); Teachers: Prof. Francesca Mazzia, (see course schedule below).
• Recommender Systems (3 credits); Teachers: Dr. Cataldo Musto and Dr. Fedelucio Narducci, (see course schedule below).
