Study Plan and Courses 2018-2019

The study plan includes:

1. INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH, guided by at least one Tutor, which culminates with the defense of an original PhD dissertation. The Doctorate Committee appoints one Tutor for each student. In some cases, a second Tutor may be appointed. Students will have daily contact with the research group within which they are placed. In addition, they should expect a formal meeting with their Tutor(s) at least once a month.
All research students will present their research regularly throughout their studies in seminars, annual reviews, summer schools, and research conferences both in Italy and abroad. Students will get some funding to attend conferences and workshops.

2. BASIC COURSES (5 credits), a common core for all the PhD students, whose aim is to study in depth the paradigms (theoretical, experimental, etc.) used in the Mathematics and Computer Science disciplines for knowledge progress. Basic courses require a final exam to be given by the end of the second year of the Doctorate Programme.

  • Project Management (2 credits, 23 hours, course period: Jan - Feb '19), Prof. Danilo Caivano.
  • Empirical Methods and Data Analysis (3 credits, 24 hours, course period: May - Jul '19), Prof. Fabio Q. B. Da Silva (2 credits) and Prof. Teresa 
    Baldassarre (1 credit).
 

3. SPECIALIZED COURSES (35 credits), which may also include international summer schools of interest for the individual research. The student chooses the specialized courses of interest to be attended during the first two years; three of such courses require a final exam to be given by the end of the second year of the Doctorate Programme.

4. SEMINARS on various topics, to be attended during the three years of the Doctorate Programme, for at least 40 hours: a) 10 hours on topics related to advanced information technology; b) 10 hours on scientific research writing; c) 20 hours on topics related to research programs, knowledge sharing with industry, copyright and patents. Such seminars are part of the student education, as required in article 4, section 1 (f) ) of the 8th Feb 2013 Ministerial Decree n. 45 ("Regulations concerning ... criteria for the creation of  PhD Programmes by registered institutions”).
For the academic year 2018-2019, the seminars of point c above are organised in the following three modules (to see their schedule click here):

2. Research Promotion (Feb-Mar '19, 12 hours)
3. Performance management (Feb '19, 2 hours)

  • Operator Semigroups and Applications to Financial Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (1 credit, 8 hours, course period: May - Jul '19), Teacher Prof. Jerome Arthur Goldstein, visiting professor from University of Memphis (USA).
  • Nonlinear Operator Semigroups (1 credit, 8 hours, course period: May - Jul '19); Teacher Prof.Gisele Ruiz Goldstein, visiting professor from University of Memphis (USA).
  • Fourier Analysis and Applications to Evolutions and Parabolic PDE's (4 credits, 32 hours, course period: Oct '19); Teacher Prof. Marcelo Ebert, visiting professor from University of Sao Paulo (Brasil).
  • Approximation of functions (2 credits, 16 hours, course period: Oct '19); Teacher Prof.Carmen Arevalo, visiting professor from University of Lund (Sweden).
  • Logarithmic norms and stability theory in IVPs, BVPs and FDEs (2 credits, 16 hours, course period: Oct '19); Teacher Prof. Gustaf Sóderlind, visiting professor from University of Lund (Sweden).

  • Machine learning in cybersecurity (2 credits, 16 hours, course period: Jan - Feb '19); Teacher Prof. Annalisa Appice.
  • Usable Security (2 credits, 16 hours, course period: Feb - Mar '19); Teacher Dr. Giuseppe Desolda.
  • Cloud Security (2 credits, 16 hours, course period: Mar - Apr '19); Teacher Prof. Antonio Piccinno.
  • Big Data Analytics (4 credits, 32 hours, course period: May - Jun '19); Teacher Prof. Michelangelo Ceci and Dr. Gianvito Pio.
  • Behavioral Software Engineering (2 credits, 16 hours, course period: Jun - Oct '19); Teacher Prof. Robert Feldt, visiting professor from University of Technology – Blekinge Institute of Technology (Sweden).
  • Impacts of Data Science and Data Analytics on Software Development (2 credits, 16 hours, course period: Sep - Oct '19); Teacher Prof. Ayse Bener, visiting professor from Ryerson University, Toronto (Canada).
